History of Jos A Bank

Everything began in 1866, when Charles Bank arrived to Baltimore, Maryland from Lithuania. He was a tailor so he decided to open his own shop in order to produce trousers. In 1898, his grandson Joseph A. Bank started to work for him at the age of 11. He began as a cutter but soon he became a salesman.
In one of his travels, he met saleswoman and competitor Anna Hartz. She was the daughter of Lena Hartz who owned one of the rivals clothing companies. They got married and Joseph founded L. Hartz and Bank together with his mother-in-law. This new company was specialized in men’s suits.
In 1945, Joseph A. Bank and his son, Howard, bought the remaining part of the company belonging to Hartz family. They created Jos A Bank and Co, the acclaimed brand that we know today.
In 1981, the company was sold and it stopped belonging to the Bank family. Despite this fact, the organization kept growing fast and it hit the NASDAQ stock exchange in 1994, already rebranded as Jos A Bank Clothiers. The first website was launched in 1998. After that year, the company doesn’t produce its clothes any more. The manufacturing is outsourced.
The last milestone in the history of the company took place in 2014 when Jos A Bank and Men’s Wearhouse merged, creating Tailored Brands.
