In 1894 a cashier from North Yorkshire, Thomas Spencer, joined him. It is interesting that by them he only contributed 300 pounds! After that, the shop took both their surnames as it’s chain name.
Marks and Spencer, known also as "M&S", made its reputation with a policy of only selling British-made goods. It started in the early 20th century, as they entered into long-term relationships with British manufacturers. In that time, 1928 to be precise, they started selling clothes and food under the "St Michael" brand. It was in the honour of Michael Marks. This custom started disappearing in the nineties.
