OnePlus history

The company was founded in 2013 by two Chinese men, Carl Pei and Pete Lau. The last one was a former vice-president of Oppo (Chinese consumer electronics and mobile communications company). As per Chinese public records, Oppo is the only one One Plus’ stakeholder, although Pete Lau denied that information. He confirmed that it is a major investor, but One Plus was still in search of others.
Carl and Pete had one common goal -create a mobile which would be balanced between a high quality and a low price. They believed that users would never buy a phone which would be cheaper but worse, so quality became an important factor to them. As they said, their aim was to improve the user's day-to-day experience.
In 2015, OnePlus signed an exclusive agreement with Cyanogn Inc. The main purpose was to use it’s trademark outside of China.
The company was much of a success, releasing at least one new mobile per year. To succeed even stronger, in 2019 they made a deal with Robert Downey Junior, who endorsed OnePlus 7 Pro. As planned, it gave the company a significant revenue.

“Smash the past” campaign

In 2014, when OnePlus’ first mobile was released, the company promoted it with a campaign “Smash the past”. It consisted of destroying some participant’s phones on video in order to purchase the OnePlus mobile for a symbolic 1 dollar. The campaign caused a little confusion - some people smashed their phones without even participating in the contest and being selected to do so. Later, the rules were revised and the company changed the destruction of the old mobile for donating it.

Invitation system
